Phoenix to LA in 10 Seconds: I love these little shorts by Mike Matas. If you haven’t seen any of his work take a few minutes and browse through his shorts. Is there anything he can’t do?

Modern procrastination

In his latest blog post, Seth tackles the topic of modern procrastination. I’ve been guilty of this for sure.

Fraser Speirs gets it.

The tech industry will be in paroxysms of future shock for some time to come. Many will cling to their January-26th notions of what it takes to get “real work” done; cling to the idea that the computer-based part of it is the “real work”.

It’s not. The Real Work is not formatting the margins, installing the printer driver, uploading the document, finishing the PowerPoint slides, running the software update or reinstalling the OS.

The Real Work is teaching the child, healing the patient, selling the house, logging the road defects, fixing the car at the roadside, capturing the table’s order, designing the house and organising the party.

Think of the millions of hours of human effort spent on preventing and recovering from the problems caused by completely open computer systems. Think of the lengths that people have gone to in order to acquire skills that are orthogonal to their core interests and their job, just so they can get their job done.

I think we’ll look back on posts like these and say these people really understood what the iPad was about. It’s not about a gold rush, content delivery or a touchable computer, it’s about getting out of the way.

iPad is an incredible opportunity for developers to re-imagine every single category of desktop and web software there is. Seriously, if you’re a developer and you’re not thinking about how your app could work better on the iPad and its descendants, you deserve to get left behind.

The iPad Is For Everyone But Us

I think Mike Rundle nails it with this piece. If you’re a heavy Mac user, you’re probably asking yourself if you really need an iPad.  YOU probably don’t, and that’s the point.

iPad Stencil

I’m just as anxious as anyone else to start designing for the iPad.  I always have to start with paper. I put together a stencil that is based on actual scale. If you can get some use out of it feel free to download [updated].

And yes, we’re already playing around with iPad app ideas at Overcommitted

Update: I’ve updated the stencil to be closer to actual screen size. Thanks to Craig for catching how off the original was.

PSD Templates: Kevin Andersson has put together a nice iPad PSD template for those of you that would like to work out your idea in Photoshop. Jord Riekwel also has a PSD template. Teenhan+Lax has put together their iPad template, good to see they are keeping up with their famous templates.

Paper Templates: Here’s another take on a paper-based stencil for the iPad

You cannot not communicate. Every behaviour is a kind of communication. Because behaviour does not have a counterpart (there is no anti-behaviour), it is not possible not to communicate.
